Govedari is the only larger settlement in Mljet National Park, and also the seat of the national park management. The village is connected with Pomena (a nice cove with Hotel Odisej and various sports and recreational facilities), the Polace harbor and Veliko Jezero.

GOVEDARI, a village in the interior of the north-western part of the island of Mljet, 5 km above the Veliko Jezero (Big Lake) bay; population 179. Chief occupations are farming, viticulture, olive growing and fishing. Govedari is located on the regional road which runs along the entire island of Mljet.

The first settlement was founded by the Benedictine monks at the end of the 18th century for the seasonal laborers from Herzegovina and the region of the Neretva, who were working on the monastery estates. The road descends from Govedari toward the south-east, into the fertile valley called Pomijenta. On the coast of Veliko Jezero are several houses of Babine Kuce (Grandmas' Houses), a hamlet of Govedari.
